Fumigation involves the application of a fumigant, generally a gas or vapour, to eradicate a pest or sterilise grain or seed to prevent germination. 

Fumigants must be registered with the APVMA. Some example of fumigants are

  • Methyl Bromide
  • Chloropicrin
  • Hydrogen Cyanide
  • Phosphine
  • Propylene oxide
  • Sulfuryl Fluoride 

The Australian Standard relevant to fumigation work is AS 2476 -2008 General fumigation procedures.

Each State and Territory has difference licensing requirements for those operators that wish to undertake fumigation work.
